Rust
prevention
This article is still under construction.
The intend is to describe the rust prevention techniques I use to rust
proof SZ cars.
I will show the vulnerable spots and how they are reached and
protected with the right equipment and products.
I mainly use two products, Mike Sanders Fat and Fluid Film.
Mike Sanders is a petroleum based corrosion preventive with a
pasty consistency at room temperature that turns liquid at higher
temperatures.
The main advantage to waxes is that it will not harden over time. On a sunny day it will
soften up and continue to creep into crevaces or over newly formed rust.
The application is quite involving as it must be applied heated to 120
deg. Celsius.
Fluid Film is based on lanolin (sheep wool oil), it's main use
is rust protection of ballast tanks in large
ocean going vessels. It is amazing in its capablity to stop existing
rust. On painted and blank steel it will slowly run of.
I always retreat the spots with Mike Sanders after Fluid Film has done
it's work and all excessive Fluid Film has run of (after approx. 6 month)
This are the main tools and materials I use: an endoscope to examine hidden
areas of the bodywork, an electric canner to heat up the fat, a
pressurized gun with different tubings and probes and the Mike Sanders
fat.

The picture below shows the fat applied under the front bumper area. The
detail shown is the section where the "lip" is attached to the rest of
the body (right below the headlamps). It can be seen very well that the fat has crept into all crevaces.
Here
one can see how the product slowly creeps out of the wheelarch where two sheet metal sections are spot welded together. The
fat was applied from behind (thru the boot area). This is the spot where
normally water creeps in thru capillary action and causes the heavy
rust damage found on some car's wheelarches.
